Austin churches answer prayers for affordable housing — by building it themselves
Five years ago, the conference that oversees United Methodist churches in this part of Texas entered into an agreement with Foundation Communities, an affordable housing builder in Austin.
The organization demolished the church and in its place built 135 apartments. The homes, which opened late last year, are currently rented to people earning low incomes. A small portion of the homes are reserved for families who have lived on the streets.
